Industry laboratory of introduction and technology of non-traditional berry plants

Head of the laboratory is Nikolai Boleslavovich Pavlovsky, PhD in biology. On January 1, 1985, the laboratory for the introduction of fruit and berry plants of the Central Botanical Garden was created on the basis of the Gantsevichi scientific and experimental base built in 1980 and part of the Gantsevichi forestry enterprise. In October 2013, it was renamed the laboratory for the introduction of berry plants, and in August 2018, an industry laboratory for the introduction and technology of non-traditional berry plants was created on its basis. Over the years, the laboratory was headed by: N.N. Ruban, PhD in agriculture (1985-2006), T.V. Kurlovich, PhD in biology (2006-2008). From 2008 to the present, the laboratory has been headed by Nikolai Boleslavovich Pavlovsky, PhD in biology. The laboratory employs 17 people (2 PhDs), including 1 leading researcher, 1 researcher, 2 junior researchers, 2 leading agronomists, 1 agronomist, 1 engineer, 1 driver, 1 tractor driver, 1 farm manager and 5 plant care workers.

Main areas of scientific and applied research

  • Introduction of berry plants of the Lingonberry family (large-fruited cranberry, highbush blueberry, common lingonberry);
  • Assessment of their adaptive potential and identification of the most promising taxa for the conditions of Belarus;
  • Development and improvement of technological methods for cultivating non-traditional berry crops.

The most important results of scientific and applied research

A collection gene pool of berry plants of the native and world flora of the Vacciniacea, Ericaceae, Lonicerae and other families has been created. The laboratory staff has introduced more than 40 taxa of cranberry, more than 50 of blueberry, about 20 of lingonberry, about 10 of edible honeysuckle and other rare berry plants.

The main ecological and biological patterns of growth and development of introduced berry plants in new soil and climatic conditions have been identified.

The implementation of the adaptive potential of the varieties of lingonberry, highbush blueberry and large-fruited cranberry brought to Belarus has been assessed.

The prospects of industrial cultivation of large-fruited cranberry, highbush blueberry and varietal lingonberry in the conditions of Belarus have been scientifically substantiated.

The most promising varieties of highbush blueberry, large-fruited cranberry and common lingonberry for industrial and home gardening have been identified.

Based on the results of research by laboratory staff, 4 varieties of large-fruited cranberry, 8 varieties of highbush blueberry and 1 variety of lingonberry have been included in the "State Register of Varieties and Tree-Shrub Species Approved for Use in the Territory of the Republic of Belarus" common.

The regenerative abilities of berry crops of the Lingonberry family have been determined and methods for vegetative propagation and obtaining planting material have been developed.
